Playground maintenance made simple image

Managing a playground doesn't have to feel overwhelming. We don't just design and build robust, reliable playgrounds, we're here for the long run too. We understand this can feel like a big responsibility, especially when managing it on behalf of a wider community, and we're always here to help.

Our team is always at the end of the phone or an email, ready to support you with anything from a quick question to a more serious concern. We also provide guidance to help you feel confident in ongoing visual checks like spotting wear, checking fixings, and keeping things in great condition.

Your maintenance schedule at a glance

Daily checks (5 minutes)

Start each day with a quick walk-around to ensure your playground is ready for visitors. Look out for:

  • Litter and debris that could pose hazards or create an unwelcoming environment
  • Obvious damage such as broken equipment, sharp edges, or structural issues
  • Trip hazards like uneven surfaces, or displaced safety surfacing
  • Animal fouling that needs immediate attention for health and safety

These daily checks are your first line of defence and help catch issues before they become bigger problems.

Weekly inspections (15-20 minutes)

Your weekly routine should be more thorough, focusing on the structural integrity and overall cleanliness:

  • Check all fixings for signs of loosening or wear
  • Look for emerging wear patterns that might need monitoring

Periodic maintenance (Monthly or Quarterly)

These more comprehensive checks ensure long-term safety and equipment longevity:

  • Inspect all parts systematically for signs of wear, corrosion, or fatigue
  • Tighten bolts and fixings as needed (but don't over-tighten)
  • Clean all surfaces thoroughly, including hard-to-reach areas with an algaecide to ensure wood remains in good condition.
  • Check moving parts like swings, springs, and rotating elements for smooth operation

Annual professional inspection

Every playground requires a certified inspection by a trained professional. This comprehensive assessment:

  • Identifies issues that might not be visible during routine checks
  • Ensures compliance with current safety standards
  • Provides documentation for insurance and liability purposes
  • Offers expert recommendations for repairs or improvements

Special considerations throughout the year

Timber Movement: Natural timber expands and contracts with weather changes. Check fixings more frequently during dry weather when timber shrinkage can loosen connections.

Wind Safety: Remove shade sails and temporary fixtures during high wind warnings to prevent damage to both the additions and main playground structure.

Vandalism: Unfortunately, playgrounds can be targets for vandalism. Regular checks help identify and address damage quickly, maintaining both safety and community pride.

Seasonal Hazards: Watch for slippery autumn leaves on platforms and slides, ice formation in winter, and increased animal activity in warmer months.

Contamination: Beyond animal fouling, watch for broken glass, or other dangerous litter that requires special handling.

Making maintenance manageable

Remember, consistent small efforts prevent major problems. Consider creating a simple log to track your inspections and any issues found. This documentation helps identify patterns and demonstrates your commitment to safety.

We have included a Home Front guide for you to download to start your logging of your play area inspections and maintenance activities.

We're always here to support you in keeping your playground safe, attractive, and fun. Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns, no matter how small they might seem.
