How to:

create your primary school playground

Where do I start?

So, you've been given the task of creating your primary school’s next playground. Whether you've done this before or it’s brand new, you may be thinking, where do I even begin?  Firstly, don’t panic, we’re here to help every step of the way.

First things first, we’ll listen, we want to know more about your school and community. Tell us what you want for the children, and what they need (physical, cognitive and social development). It’s important for us to understand all your considerations, so that when it comes to design, we have a very clear understanding of your goals and ambitions, and all this starts with a conversation.

What do we need to know?

We’ll talk about what's important to you and your school, your challenges, your objectives and the space you’d like to create.  We won’t jump straight into design, let's really pin down these important details.

  • Space and location
  • Age and ability of the children
  • Must haves, wants and wishes
  • Bringing your school and ethos into the design, making it just for you
  • Your time frames, when works for you and when doesn’t.
  • Budgets and funding - don’t worry if you haven’t got this in place just yet, we can help with this (and we’ve got some really useful information and tips on our funding/fundraising page).

After this we’ll have a clear understanding of all your primary school’s requirements which means we can put together the detailed brief. This is a short summary of all the specifics we have spoken about and is there to make sure we both understand each other. Once we’ve all agreed, time for the design!

What will our play area look like?

Using the brief, we’ll design an initial concept and send it back your way (this is where you’ll be able to see our conversations come to life). We’ll run through the design and listen to your feedback, and make any amends you’d like. Once you’ve agreed on the design, we’ll greenlight the final version along with the quote. This is  also a great opportunity to share the progress with the parents and children, can you imagine how excited they’ll be.

One final confirmation for the day of installation and the hard work on your side is done. All those worrying thoughts about how, when and why will now be a thing of the past…

How do you build/install your play equipment?

It’s at this point our team in the workshop starts making your playground. We like to build as much as we can in our workshop to cause the least amount of disruption to you as possible.  Also by doing this, it gives us another opportunity to quality check all the wood, fixtures and fittings.

Next, this is one of our favourite days (and hopefully yours) of the project.  The installation. We always start the day by laying out the playground into position, this gives you the opportunity to see the size but to also make sure it’s in the right place.  We do this as our final check.

When you give us the go ahead, we’ll get to work (sorry if the kids get distracted and start looking out the window, this happens a lot).

The big question is…who gets to try out the slide, climbing wall or rope bridge first?

Just like that your primary school’s dream playground will appear before you with children and parents laughing and smiling all around. All the things you had hoped for, all thanks to you.

What about wear, tear, and maintenance?

Now the play area is finally ready, and kids are using and abusing it, this is where your need for lasting quality and sturdiness has proven to be a great decision.

To make sure they’ve got as many years of play & enjoyment ahead as possible, thanks to the unrivalled quality of our tradesmen and timber, your new play area benefits from a 12-month guarantee against all workmanship defects and a 20-year guarantee against timber failure. This means a complete piece of mind and knowledge that’ll last for years to come.

However, we’re no dreamers, and as much as it pains us to say it, sometimes, no matter how infrequently, things do go wrong - we know a problem shared is a problem halved - that's why we want you to let us know as soon as possible to make sure we’re there to help resolve the issue. We can provide advice, and resources, or if you’d prefer us to maintain your playground, that’s no problem, we offer maintenance packages to suit your needs.

These are all the things you’d expect when choosing Home Front, we think these should go without saying, but if you’d like to learn more about why we are so trusted and respected in our industry then look no further. But don't just take our word for it - see what are customers have to say as well - check out our reviews & testimonials.
